Langen, Germany, July 17, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced the release of MB51T008A, a silicon substrate-based, gallium-nitride (GaN) power device that features a breakdown voltage of 150 V. The new device, which enables normally-off operations, is capable of achieving roughly one half the figure of merit (FOM) of silicon-based power devices with an equivalent breakdown voltage. With the addition of the new product to its line-up, Fujitsu Semiconductor will be able to offer GaN devices that contribute to smaller, more efficient power supplies for a wide range of fields, from home appliances and ICT equipment to automotive and industrial applications. Sample quantities of the new product will be made available starting July 2013, the volume production is scheduled to begin in 2014.

The MB51T008A has a number of advantages, including on-state resistance of 13 m and total gate charge of 16 nC, which enables roughly half the FOM of silicon-based power devices with an equivalent breakdown voltage. It is characterised by minimal parasitic inductance and high-frequency operations through the use of WLCSP packaging; and a proprietary gate design that enables normally-off operations. The new device is ideal for high-side switches and low-side switches in DC-DC converters employed in power supplies for data communications equipment, industrial products, and automobiles. In addition, because it supports a higher switching frequency in power supply circuits, power supplies can achieve improvements in overall size and efficiency.

In addition to MB51T008A, which features a breakdown voltage of 150 V, Fujitsu Semiconductor is also developing models with breakdown voltages of 600 V and 30 V, thereby helping to enable enhanced power efficiency in a wide range of product areas. These GaN power devices are based on the High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) technology, which Fujitsu Laboratories has led the development since the 1980s. Building on the rich IP portfolio of the technology, Fujitsu Semiconductor will rapidly bring its GaN power devices to market. It also plans to build partnerships with customers across a wide range of industries, in order to expand its business further.

The MB51T008A and other GaN products from Fujitsu Semiconductor will be on display at “TECHNO- FRONTIER 2013″, to be held July 17-19 at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan. The company also plans to highlight performance improvements in its GaN power devices with 600 V breakdown voltages, as well as prototypes and test data of a 2.5 kW power supply employing a GaN power device, a high-frequency PFC, and a high-frequency DC-DC converter.

Langen, Germany, July 4, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) and Conitec today announced the launch of their new MCA-32 Multiboard Adapter production optimisation solution. Controller programming often presents a bottle-neck in microcontroller board production, since each board needs to be individually hooked up to the programming unit, programmed and then tested. The new MCA-32 Multiboard Adapter permits the simultaneous programming of up to 32 Fujitsu microcontroller boards. These substantial time savings translate into reduced costs for the production process.

MCA-32 can be used in conjunction with any Conitec GALEP-5 programming unit. Once slotted into the programming socket, the adapter is then connected to the ISP ports of up to 32 boards via ribbon cables. The program/read operations are performed via the controller”s 1-wire interface. The system currently supports 8-bit processors of the Fujitsu”s MB95F series. Derivatives of this series are optimised for use in household appliances, small and large electrical appliances and industrial machinery. Supplied in configurations featuring between 20 and 80 pins, they are available both as standard microcontrollers and with specialised functions for controlling motors, LCDs or touch sensors.

The adapter can be switched between multi- and single-channel modes. In single-channel mode, each of the 32 boards can be selected individually for an erase test/read/program. In multi-channel mode, all boards are programmed in parallel. Serial numbers and other data items can be generated individually for each processor – even in multi-channel mode. The result of the programming test plus any component calibration data can be evaluated by using a customer-specific dynamic link library (DLL). Alternatively, the adapter offers a plug for external signals for triggering the programming operation and communicating the pass/fail status.

Langen, Germany, June 13, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today introduced its new FM4 family of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers, which are based on the ARM® Cortex™-M4F processor core. The MCUs are designed for applications that require advanced, high-speed computing performance – ranging from general-purpose inverters, servomotors, PLCs and other industrial equipment to energy-efficient, inverter-based consumer appliances. The new FM4 family consists of a total of 84 MCUs and samples will be made available from July. The devices build on Fujitsu”s popular FM3 family, offering increased computational performance, enhanced peripheral functionality and an easy-to-use design.

FM4 MCUs in the MB9B560R/460R/360R/160R series can operate from 3 V or 5 V power supplies, and offer a range of memory options that includes SRAM, NOR flash, NAND flash and SDRAM. The MCUs feature an ultra-wide bus for on-chip flash memory that enables read access with no CPU wait state, so as to accelerate processing and reduce power requirements.

The Cortex-M4 core incorporates DSP and FPU functions that provide the power required for advanced computation. Algorithms for operating on-chip flash memory have been redesigned for greater speed and lower power consumption. The current required to run the real-time clock (RTC) and power the device via the dedicated VBAT pin can be limited to approximately 1.5 A, making these high-performance MCUs useful even for standby power-conscious applications. The devices support a total of 100,000 rewrite cycles and data retention of up to 20 years.

Later this year, we will launch the FM0+ family: based on ARM® Cortex™-M0+, this rounds off the portfolio by adding support for low-cost and ultra-low-power applications.”

Precise, fully-featured analogue circuitry, plus enhanced timer and communications functionality
The FM4 family also includes new peripheral functionality and enhances existing functions. The analogue circuitry in previous versions has now been redesigned. New trimming functions deliver internal oscillator accuracy of 2 percent. The D/A converter can achieve 12-bit resolution and the 12-bit A/D converter operates at twice the speed of previous versions. The multifunction timer for three-phase motors also features a number of enhanced functions, such as support for asymmetric PWM waveform output and multiple A/D start triggers. The minimum timing resolution possible is 6.25 nanoseconds, while enhanced timer functions and an improved A/D converter enable high-precision motor control and improvements to energy efficiency.

To accelerate SPI communications, clock rates of up to 20 MHz are supported, and MCUs can also support variable data lengths of up to 16 bits. Redesigned communications IP with DSTC (Descriptor System data Transfer Controller) improves high-speed serial data communications, and DSTC functionality also reduces the CPU”s workload and software overhead.

Functional safety is becoming increasingly important for industrial and consumer applications. To support software design in this field and facilitate certification, FM4 microcontrollers feature a range of hardware functions such as ECC (Error Correction Code) Flash, CRC and MPU (Memory Protection Unit).

Full microcontroller line-up
The new FM4 series versions will be packaged in LQFPs and BGAs, with bulk volumes available later this summer. The FM4 line-up will be expanded throughout 2013, with new devices featuring lower pin counts, higher-capacity flash, Ethernet MAC for networked automation devices, and I2S/HDMI-CEC for consumer applications.

Since launching the FM3 family in 2010, Fujitsu Semiconductor has sought to offer a microcontroller line-up that is reliable, easy to deploy and offers clear specifications. The company has already brought more than 570 products to market, delivering solutions tailored to a wide range of applications.

Later this year, Fujitsu Semiconductor plans to release the FM0+ family of microcontrollers for low-cost, ultra-low power applications. Fujitsu Semiconductor Develops World’s First 360° Wraparound View System with Approaching Object Detection

Releases automotive graphics processing LSI also enabling centralized control of display information for different driving situations

Munich, Germany, 16 May 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced the development of MB86R24, the company’s third-generation high-performance graphic SoCs for automotive applications. The new product will be made available in sample quantities starting in August 2013, along with the related software.

Featuring improved CPU and GPU performance for faster processing and sharper image rendering, MB86R24 comes equipped with 6 full HD input channels and 3 display output channels, allowing for greater flexibility in input/output control. By employing the new chip, Fujitsu Semiconductor has, for the first time in the world, been able to incorporate the Approaching Object Detection functionality-which notifies drivers of nearby people, bicycles and other objects-into the 360° Wraparound View System that allows drivers to check their entire surroundings in 3D from any angle.

In addition, the product will also enable the development of integrated Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems that consolidate and provide centralized control over a variety of onboard vehicle information. Until now, the display of such information on multiple screens has been controlled independently for each screen.

MB86R24 is expected to significantly help in improving safety, comfort and peace of mind for automobiles, as well as for home and industrial applications that are becoming increasingly important.

In recent years, there has been growing concern regarding automobile safety, as can be seen by the establishment of the Kids and Transportation Safety Act in the United States. At the same time, demand for automotive systems is increasing on a daily basis. In light of these trends, Fujitsu Semiconductor developed MB86R24, a graphics SoC that makes it possible to create a 360° Wraparound View System that notifies drivers about objects approaching the vehicle, as well as integrated HMI systems that connects people with data from inside and outside the vehicle.

360° Wraparound View System with Approaching Object Detection

The 360° Wraparound View System uses cameras facing forward, backward, left, and right to synthesize a 3D model of the environment and then display the surroundings from any perspective. Last year, Fujitsu Semiconductor developed a 360° wraparound view system that employed a second-generation MB86R10 series graphics SoC and also worked with megapixel cameras. As systems such as this, which give clear visual confirmation of a vehicle’s surroundings, grow in popularity, there will be increasing expectations for additional functionality that reduces the likelihood of driver oversights while promoting safer, more confident driving.

MB86R24 boasts roughly double the CPU performance and 5 times the GPU performance of its second-generation predecessor, delivering sharper images and the ability to view surroundings from any perspective. The chip also features Approaching Object Detection, which notifies the driver of nearby objects approaching the vehicle. The proximity detection algorithm was developed jointly with Fujitsu Laboratories, and is the world premiere to be implemented as part of a 360° wraparound view system.

This SoC can also take input from 6 cameras simultaneously, thereby enabling greater flexibility in rendering 3D imagery and making the technology applicable in a wider range of scenarios.

Integrated HMI Systems

In recent years, the amount of information shared between drivers, vehicles and the outside world has been steadily growing. Such information includes battery information for electric vehicles, camera imagery, navigation information, and connectivity with smartphones and the cloud. Different kinds of information are displayed on different screens, such as central console displays, cluster displays, or heads-up displays, all of which require separate display control. To provide such information in real time to drivers in an easy-to-understand manner, there is a need for technology that can collect information in a single location and centrally control how it is displayed depending on the driving scenario. HMI systems can accomplish this, and MB86R24 is able to control each display to present information that suits the current driving scenario.

Moreover, the new SoC facilitates the development of modules and platforms for displays that can be incorporated into multiple models, rather than one-off development for each car model as in the past. This, in turn, enables a significant reduction in part counts for display systems, while also making it easy to reuse products in different car models.

At the same time, Fujitsu Semiconductor also offers the software needed to build these systems. This enables one-stop development of high-performance systems with far less work than before.

Product Features

High-performance CPU and GPU: The CPU employs two ARM® Cortex™-9 cores along with the PowerVR™SGX543 3D graphics, enabling roughly double the CPU performance and 5 times the GPU performance of its predecessors. MB86R24 also features Fujitsu Semiconductor’s proprietary 2D graphics engine. Since the 3D and 2D graphics engine each run independently of one another, it is possible to obtain even greater graphics processing performance.

Multiple video input sources, enhanced display output: With support for input from 6 full HD input channels and 3 graphics output channels, the system can accept input from high-resolution cameras and high-definition content, which can then be displayed on multiple high-resolution screens.

Advanced rendering performance with multi-layer support: In addition to a 2D engine, 3D engine, and video capture function, all of which can be run simultaneously, the new SoC features 8 rendering layers, making it possible to perform graphics processing on different layers that is optimized to meet the needs of specific applications and content.

Extensive software toolset: The 360° Wraparound View System with Approaching Object Detection works with the toolset software for the previous edition of the technology, and software enabling Approaching Object Detection functionality will also be made available. For integrated HMI systems, Fujitsu Semiconductor offers CGI Studio, an authoring tool that allows content designers and engineers to collaboratively design media for the system.

Langen, Germany, May 7, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today introduced a new series of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers based on the ARM® Cortex™-M3 processor, expanding the Fujitsu FM3 MCU family to around 500 products in total. This new MCU series includes the MB9BF121JWQN model, which features low-pin-count QFN packaging and is optimized for system control in household appliances, office automation systems and industrial equipment. The MCUs announced today are part of the FM3 Family”s Basic Group, which balances performance and cost. Sample quantities will be available starting May 10, 2013.

Low-Pin-Count Packaging Makes MB9B120J Series Ideal for Inverter Control and Sensor Designs
The new MB9B120J series is the first series in the FM3 family to feature 32-pin packaging. LQFP and QFN package types are offered, with dimensions starting at 5 mm x 5 mm. Features such as a trimmed on-chip RC oscillator and internal pull-up resistors reduce the number of external components, further shrinking the PCB footprint. Thus, serving applications like industrial sensors, where small chip dimensions are crucial.

The series is available at operating speeds of up to 72 MHz, which is the ceiling for the FM3 Family”s Basic Group. Optimized peripheral functions make this series an optimal choice for applications requiring low-pin inverter control. These include general-use inverters and motors for low-end industrial equipment, as well as household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and induction cooking appliances. The series is also ideal for devices requiring a one-to-one motor-to-microcontroller system architecture. The functional core of the inverter is the “multi-function timer”, which includes sophisticated, flexible ADC trigger configurations, pulse-width modulation (PWM) and a waveform generator with dead time insertion. The ADC features 12-bit resolution and converts 1 million samples per second.

As with all FM3 Basic Group microcontrollers, the MB9B120J series features a broad supply voltage range extending from 2.7 V to 5.5 V. The ability to deploy these MCUs in 5 V environments is an advantage for developers needing to consider rugged design models. Complementing the hardware feature set, users also benefit from the various software packages and solutions provided by Fujitsu. These assure rapid project start-up and a fast time to market.

Introduced in 2010, the Fujitsu FM3 MCU family also includes High Performance, Low Power and Ultra Low Leak groups. In the near future, Fujitsu is planning to expand its microcontroller portfolio with the FM4 Family of Cortex-M4-based processors and the FM0+ Family of Cortex-M0+-based processors.

Langen, Germany, March 19, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today introduced its two new FRAM products, MB85RS1MT and MB85RS2MT. Featuring 1 Mbit and 2 Mbit memory densities, respectively, these are the highest density SPI FRAM products currently offered by Fujitsu Semiconductor. The new products will be made available in sample quantities from the end of March 2013.

Guaranteeing 10 trillion (101³) read-write cycles – a figure ten times higher than offered by existing chips – the two new FRAM products are ideal for applications such as smart meters, industrial machinery and medical devices. Compared to identical-density EEPROM, MB85RS1MT and MB85RS2MT reduce power consumption by 92 percent for writing operations. The new FRAM products can also make substantial reductions to component costs, mounting footprint and power consumption by replacing all of the technologies required for the system – typically consisting of EEPROM, SRAM and a battery – by single chip. As a result, FRAM strongly promotes the development of smaller systems that are more power-efficient and maintenance-friendly.

In applications such as measurement devices, industrial machinery and medical devices (e.g. hearing aids), the new 1 Mbit and 2 Mbit SPI FRAM products offer an alternative that is both considerably faster and less power-hungry than EEPROM at high density levels – resulting in systems with improved performance, better data security and a longer battery life.

For industrial machinery applications – where SRAM and EEPROM are used in parallel for storing data and parameters respectively – the new FRAM products can unify the two memory technologies. The simplified system architecture of the resulting single technology offers major customer benefits: less risk of errors in the field, reduced component count, smaller PCB footprint and reduced maintenance effort for battery replacement.

As a memory format, FRAM features both non-volatility and random access. With its fast writing speed, FRAM can safely store data immediately at sudden power outages, thus ensuring system data integrity. Exploiting this capability, FRAM products from Fujitsu Semiconductor have been widely employed in factory automation, measurement devices, banking terminals and medical devices since their launch in 1999.

Langen, Germany, March 12, 2013 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU), a market-leading provider of high-speed data converters, has enabled the large-scale deployment of single-wavelength 100Gbps optical transport systems worldwide. Fujitsu”s expertise in mixed-signal, thermal, power-optimisation and high-performance package design are key ingredients for providing SoC ASIC solutions to system vendors, paving the way for the necessary upgrade to global networking infrastructure brought on by ever-increasing bandwidth demand and traffic flow.

This demand is expected to move the requirement for 100Gbps capacity lambdas from the long-haul network, running over a few thousand kilometres, to the mid-haul, or Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

Distances are shorter in Metro networks (up to a few hundred kilometres), but port densities are higher so mechanical and thermal constraints will push 100Gbps SoC designs to be correspondingly even more power-efficient. At the same time, expectations are that system solution providers will need to be supported by SoC designs that will increase the capacity and spectral efficiency in the core network. This, in turn, will demand higher sampling rate converters for higher-order modulation schemes.

Power-efficient 28nm converters
Now in its third process technology generation for high-speed ADCs (Analogue-to-Digital Converter) and DACs (Digital-to-Analogue Converter), Fujitsu is launching the first ADC in a family of low power 28nm converters that will address system requirements for a range of different applications. The first ADC variant, developed in 28nm technology, supports sampling rates from 55 – 70 GSa/s with scalable analogue bandwidth. It will be followed shortly by a DAC with the same sampling rate range. Subsequent variants, all available for system designs in 2013, will support sampling rates ranging from 28 to 90+ GSa/s. The converters can be used in a number of different channel-count configurations and all variants will be 8-bit and scale down in power based on sampling rate. The 28nm converters also scale down in power compared to the Fujitsu CHAIS converters offered in 40nm process technology.

Alongside the growing volume of 100Gbps long-haul optical transport deployments, there is a demand for future solutions based on advanced modulation techniques combined with high-speed, high-resolution low-power converters to address growing bandwidth demands in a number of sectors. This includes everything from inter- and intra-datacenter optical links for 100Gbps Ethernet over a few hundreds of meters to interconnect across a PCB or a backplane channel. As in the Metro transport market, this is pushing high-speed converter designs to be increasingly flexible and power-efficient. Building on over six years of design experience spanning three process technology nodes, Fujitsu continues to be at the forefront of analogue design to support the needs of these new and growing market challenges.

FM Family for industrial solutions
“FM” is an abbreviation of “Fujitsu Cortex-M”, Fujitsu”s ARM Cortex-M based microcontroller platform for industrial markets. The FM product family is designed as a universal platform, with packages from 32 to 176 pins and Flash memory sizes from 64 KB to 1.5 MB. It consists of more than 450 immediately-available members of the FM3 family, plus FM4 and FM0+ family members that will be available in sample quantities from spring and summer 2013, respectively.

The FM Family offers a wide operating voltage range, including real 5 V operation. Industrial network interfaces include up to 2 channels each of CAN, USB and Ethernet – a world first. FMtouch is a solution package for capacitive touch applications such as touch buttons, sliders, scroll wheels, x/y matrices and proximity sensing based on any member of the FM Family. The platform is optimised for use in industrial or medical applications and in white goods. Its patent-pending, hardware-accelerated capacitive touch sensing uses one ADC input pin per touch channel and offers high sensitivity (<<10fF), a high dynamic range and a high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). It includes in-built automatic offset calibration and crosstalk suppression, and is also capable of handling thick front panels or front panels composed of several layers. Capacitive touch functionality can run on the application”s central FM MCU and can therefore be integrated without additional cost. The FMtouch solution consists of a dedicated firmware library plus a Windows-based development GUI; available documentation includes application notes on real-world FMtouch integration as well as software examples. Dedicated starter kits include initial hardware to enable rapid project ramp-up.

FMconnect USB
The FMconnect USB solution is a set of software components, tools, documentation and development boards packaged to enable rapid implementation of USB in embedded applications. At its core is the PC-based “Fujitsu USB Wizard” GUI, which uses a simple 3-step approach to help generate USB-related firmware code. The package supports multiple out-of-the-box embedded USB solutions, as well as two USB interfaces per MCU and both Host and Device use cases. The host functions cover features such as HID mouse and keyboard or USB mass storage, while device functions include Virtual COM, HID mouse, joystick/data communication and libusb COM.

FMconnect Ethernet
Fujitsu”s FMconnect Ethernet solutions package supports specific devices of the FM3 family featuring up to two Ethernet channels per device. It utilizes proven open source components such as the lwIP TCP/IP stack as well as in-house developments such as the L3 FM low-level library. This is a key feature, since Ethernet-based communication requires significantly more development effort than simple serial connections such as UART or I2C. In this area, Fujitsu focuses on accelerating the development process by providing tailored low-level drivers, software modules and protocol stacks, as well as dedicated development boards. This enables the rapid implementation of applications such as web-based diagnosis or maintenance interfaces for industrial devices.

FMinverter
FMinverter is a solution for controlling 3-phase motors like PMSM with FM Family MCUs. The package consists of firmware for a range of motor and control types, a graphical GUI for parameterisation, documentation, scenario-specific software examples, dedicated starter kits, support services and a workshop programme. FSEU technical experts can provide customer support for projects involving non-mainstream motor drives or multi-inverter structures.

Langen, November 29, 2012 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced the expansion of its scalable line-up for automotive instrument clusters, covering everything from MCUs for traditional clusters up to 3D graphic systems on chips (SoC), as well as being capable of driving virtual or free programmable clusters. The newest member of Fujitsu”s FCR4 family, the MB9DF125, nicknamed “Atlas-L”, is based on the well-established ARM Cortex-R4 core and includes a Secure Hardware Extension (SHE) module offering customers secure high-performance operation. The SHE block is fully hardware-implemented to ensure the highest levels of security.

FSEU”s new MCU, developed in Fujitsu”s MCU Competence Centre at Langen (near Frankfurt), will enable innovative driver information systems with larger feature sets that can run more sophisticated software solutions while supporting the AUTOSAR specification. “Atlas-L” is optimised to return superior results for key industry issues such as safety, security and power consumption. The MCU is designed to operate as a single-chip solution for traditional instrument clusters without graphics or as a companion chip alongside Fujitsu”s “Emerald” SoCs for hybrid or freely-programmable (virtual) automotive instrument clusters.

Operating at up to 128 MHz, the “Atlas-L” core offers processing power of more than 200 DMIPS, together with 1 MB of flash memory and 128 KB of RAM. “Atlas-L” will be delivered in a LQFP-176 package. As with other devices within the FCR4 family, “Atlas-L” includes the safety, security and power-saving features demanded by automotive customers.

The Secure Hardware Extension is a cryptographic module that complies with the specification of the Hersteller (i.e. manufacturer) Initiative Software (HIS) consortium, whose members include Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen. The hardware-implemented SHE module in “Atlas-L” permits Tier 1 automotive suppliers and car manufacturers to design software manipulation countermeasures in electronic control units and even prevent the theft of these units. Some of the initial applications utilising this cryptographic unit will include immobiliser and keyless entry systems, plus feature activation/remote services (such as remote diagnostics or software update services).

The SHE module feature in “Atlas-L” complies with SHE Functional Specification v1.1, rev. 439 (including errata and amendments). It features secure boot using a cipher-based message authentication code (CMAC), plus the Miyaguchi-Preneel compression function inside the SHE block. The MCU contains a true random number generator, a separate storage area acting as a secure repository for non-volatile keys and RAM keys (therefore also offering secure key management and update), plus dedicated logic for the encryption of data using the highly secure AES standard with a 128-bit key length. Also able to prevent manipulation during application runtime, it provides a unique device identifier and a secure environment for cryptographic algorithms.
“Atlas-L” also offers additional device security, including secure handling of the TRACE and JTAG ports, plus flash memory security.

The first samples of the MB9DF125 “Atlas-L” MCU are available now. Fujitsu will be supplementing these units with dedicated boards, sample applications and the AUTOSAR MCAL (version 3.x and 4.x).

Langen, November 27, 2012 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced the addition of a new small package to the MB85RC16, the 16kbit ultra low-power Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM) device with an I2C interface. Fujitsu has been supplying MB85RC16 with standard package SOP-8. The new SON-8 plastic LCC (Leadless Chip Carrier) package with a dimension of 3×2 mm reduces the mounting space by 80 per cent in comparison to the SOP-8 package (see appendix figure 1). The combination of small footprint and ultra low power consumption makes the MB85RC16 a perfect non-volatile memory solution for portable and sensing applications in medical and industrial segments as well as for energy harvesting applications. With this product, customer can significantly extend battery lifetime and minimise their PCB (Printed Circuit Board) space.

Fujitsu”s FRAM features fast write access, high endurance and low-power consumption in comparison to conventional non-volatile memories. It is widely used in various segments, such as metering, industrial measurement and factory automation. Fujitsu”s MB85RC16 16kbit I2C FRAM device achieves an extremely low level of power consumption. With an active current of 70 microampere (typical at 1 MHz) and standby current of 0.1 microampere , it represents a maximum power saving of 98 per cent in comparison to standard EEPROM (see appendix figure 2). While the low power feature contributes a great deal to extend battery lifetime for portable applications, the product”s high endurance and fast access properties enable real time data logging, which is required by a number of portable medical measurement equipments.

Langen, Germany, November 22, 2012 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced that it has achieved high output power of 2.5kW in server power-supply units equipped with gallium-nitride (GaN) power devices built on a silicon substrate. Using GaN technology in power supply applications enhances power efficiency and helps reduce the carbon footprint. Compared with conventional silicon-based power devices, GaN-based power devices feature lower on-resistance and the ability to perform high-frequency operations. Since these characteristics improve the conversion efficiency of power supply units and make them more compact, this technology is ideal not just for servers but for a broad range of applications including solar inverters, battery chargers or electric vehicles.

Fujitsu Semiconductor plans to commercialise GaN power devices on a silicon substrate, increasing the diameters of the silicon wafers and enabling low-cost production. The company began work on GaN technology in 2009 and began providing specific power-supply-related partners with sample GaN power devices in 2011. Since then, Fujitsu has worked on optimizing the devices for use in power supply units. Fujitsu will start volume production of the GaN power devices by the second half of 2013.

Collaboration with Fujitsu Laboratories yields impressive results
Fujitsu Semiconductor collaborated closely with Fujitsu Laboratories on several key technical initiatives to achieve this technological progress, including the development of the process technology for growing high-quality GaN crystals on a silicon substrate. The collaboration also delivered device technologies, such as optimizing the design of electrodes to control the rise of on-resistance during switching, and devising a circuit layout for power supply units that can support high-speed switching of GaN-based devices.

The results enable Fujitsu Semiconductor to achieve conversion efficiency that exceeds the performance of conventional silicon devices by using a GaN power device in a power-factor-correction circuit. For example, Fujitsu Semiconductor created a prototype server power-supply unit incorporating a power-factor-correction circuit based on GaN technology that achieved output power of 2.5kW. This impressive performance makes GaN power devices suitable for use in high-voltage, large-current applications.

Fujitsu Semiconductor has established a mass-production line for 6-inch wafers at its Aizu-Wakamatsu plant and will begin full-scale production of GaN power devices in the second half of 2013. By offering GaN power devices optimised for customer applications and technology support for circuit designs, Fujitsu Semiconductor will enable the development of low-loss, compact power supply units for a wide range of uses.

The FM4 Family is based on the Cortex-M4 processor core, which features DSP and FPU functionality not included in the Cortex-M3 core, plus enhancements to the CPU”s overall processing power. Furthermore, while the FPU is a core option, Fujitsu Semiconductor plans to equip all products in the FM4 family with this feature. While maintaining the abundant peripheral functions of the FM3 family, the FM4 family will be further strengthened with the addition of SDRAM and SD card interface functions and an expanded package line-up. The family will also feature a wide range of timers and serial communication functions – all supplied with flash technology, which has a solid track record in automotive applications in particular. In addition to inverter control functions and various communication functions, plus CAN, USB2.0 and Ethernet support, the FM4 Family will also be equipped with high-speed serial communication functions and high-speed, high-performance A/D converters. Such features make these products ideal for motor and network controls in factory automation applications, as well as for inverters and other industrial equipment.

The FM0+ Family (new products)
The FM0+ Family is a product group of energy-efficient models employing a low-power Cortex-M0+ core and featuring the abundant peripheral functions of the FM3 Family, all supplied with flash technology. Compared to the previous Cortex-M0 core, the Cortex-M0+ core achieves a 10% increase in processing performance while reducing power consumption by a third. Nor is it just the core that is power-efficient: since functions that reduce power consumption are built into the microcontrollers, the product line-up in this group is specialized for low-power operation. The FM0+ Family has a target operating current of 70 microampere/MHz and a standby current of just 0.7 microampere (in RTC mode), which makes the products ideal for instrumentation applications that require low-power consumption – such as battery-operated devices and electronic meters – as well as in a variety of sensor controls.

The FM3 Family (enhancements to existing product line)
Fujitsu Semiconductor originally intended to expand its current line-up of 463 products in the FM3 Family to comprise over 500 products. As development progressed, however, it revised its original estimate upward and now intends to offer a total of 570 products by 2013. Fujitsu will continue to utilize low-power technology – the key characteristic of the FM3 family – to develop new products offering features not in the existing line-up. Fujitsu will add products equipped with more than 1 megabyte of flash memory, as well as low pin-count models with minimal peripheral functions. Fujitsu Semiconductor will thereby offer a range of products that are optimized for applications requiring low power consumption and a large memory – such as A/V equipment, multifunction printers, flow meters and other industrial equipment – as well as for applications that require space-saving technology, such as compact and modular devices.

Aiming to provide optimal solutions for a wide range of customer applications, Fujitsu Semiconductor plans to develop the line-up to include 700 or more industry-leading products within all three of the latest global standard Cortex-M core series.

Fujitsu launches a new Member of the FRAM V Series with Extended Wide Voltage Range from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, providing its customers with greater flexibility and improved efficiency.

Langen, Germany, 23 October 2012 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced a new addition to its wide voltage range FRAM (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory) product series (V series). FRAM is now extensively used in applications such as power meters, factory automation or monitoring systems. The newly launched MB85RC256V offers the highest density level in the V series and is Fujitsu”s first FRAM product that operates in an even wider voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V, which provides even greater flexibility for customer applications. By supporting the complete voltage range for 3.3 V and 5 V systems, the MB85RC256V unit offers customers greater efficiency in their design and logistic processes.

The new V series member will offer 256-kbit memory density with a configuration of 32k words x 8-bits. The device features I²C serial interfaces at a maximum operating frequency of 400 kHz at an operating voltage of 2.7 V to 4.5 V or a maximum of 1 MHz at an operating voltage of 4.5 V to 5.5 V. All products in this series are available in EEPROM-compatible 8-pin plastic SOP packages. As regards reliability, Fujitsu has achieved significant improvements in the V series. The specifications for the MB85RC256V offer 10 years” data retention at 85 °C and an endurance rating of 1 trillion (1012) read/write cycles, ensuring that operation is guaranteed over the industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C.

Fujitsu offers a broad spectrum of FRAM devices equipped with I²C, SPI or parallel interfaces, covering densities ranging from 4 kbit to 4 Mbit. As a special type of non-volatile memory, FRAM combines the advantages of SRAM and EEPROM with fast write access, extremely low power consumption and virtually unlimited read/write endurance. By keeping development and manufacturing in-house, Fujitsu can maximise co-operation between design and factory teams. This, in turn, provides a stable foundation from which the company can offer valuable, high-quality products to the market along a stable supply chain.

The SEVENSTAX Internet Protocol Suite now offers support for Fujitsu’s versatile FM3 single- and twin-Ethernet ARM® Cortex™-M3 microcontrollers.

Langen, Germany, 9 October 2012 – The Internet Protocol Suite from German embedded Internet specialist SEVENSTAX is now also available for Fujitsu”s single- and twin-Ethernet (TwinMAC) ARM® Cortex™-M3 microcontrollers from the FM3 family. The FM3 TwinMAC MCUs are high-end members of the FM3 family and can be deployed for a wide range of applications – such as factory or home automation and the intelligent control of illumination and alarm systems, to name just two. With the porting to the FM3 architecture, SEVENSTAX now also supports this microcontroller family.

The advantage of an MCU with two Ethernet interfaces is the range of new application options enabled by this configuration and potential cost savings. Since a daisy chain topology can be configured without additional switches, for example, this saves on the cabling costs incurred by a star topology. Another option is gateway functionality between two networks, for example, to connect a smart home with the outside world or to connect embedded systems to a remote administration system. For safety critical application scenarios, it is also a simple matter to establish redundancy or to protect a sub-network behind a firewall in security critical applications, for example.

With chip operating frequencies of up to 144 MHz, a total of 128 KB RAM and 1024 KB of Flash memory (rated at 100,000 write/erase cycles and offering up to 20 years of secure data storage), the MB9BD10S/T, MB9B610S/T and MB9B210S/T models are well equipped for demanding applications. The controllers” broad supply voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V means that they can be deployed in both 3- and 5-volt systems. This enables cost savings for power supply systems. Alongside Ethernet, the units also offer plenty of options for communication with external systems, with dual-channel CAN and USB (host + device) plus 8 multi-function serial interfaces. The numerous embedded timers also include dedicated modules for electric motor control. The MCUs are offered in 144-pin and 176-pin LQFP and BGA housings.

Langen, Germany, 27 September, 2012 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe (FSEU) today announced the launch of the fifth wave of products in its FM3 Family of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers based on the ARM® Cortex™-M3 processor core. In total, Fujitsu Semiconductor is releasing 93 new products in its High Performance and Low Power Group for a vast variety of applications.

The High Performance Group with a total of 72 new products that include the MB9B520M Series, the MB9BF524MPMC has been designed to enable simple and cost efficient inverter control, making products from the group optimal choices for household appliances, office automation equipment, and industrial equipment.

The Low Power Group with a total of 21 new products that include the MB9A150R Series, the MB9AF156RPMC is a product line that meets the demand for low-power consumption. It contains an optimal range of products for the low-power demands of consumer devices, including battery-powered mobile products, digital home appliances, and healthcare products.

The new products will be made incrementally available in sample quantities starting September 28, 2012. With the addition of these new MCUs, Fujitsu semiconductor”s top class ARM® Cortex™-M3 based microcontroller line-up will contain 463 products in total. Fujitsu Semiconductor plans to continue expanding the product line to reach more than 500 products by the end of April 2013.

Product Overview
High Performance Group: MB9B520M/320M/120M Series
With a clock speed of up to 72MHz and a rich array of peripheral functions, Fujitsu Semiconductor has added a line-up of products to the High Performance Group of the FM3 Family. In addition to inverter control functionality, products in the series are equipped with CAN, USB 2.0, a real-time clock and two independent 12-bit ADC units with up to 26 channels. Flash memory is available from 96KB to 288KB variations, including Dual Operation Flash for EEPROM emulation, as well as packaging from 48-pin to 96-pin configurations.

The series” feature mix ideally fits to Fujitsu”s solution groups FM3inverter, FM3connect and FM3touch. Sophisticated software and hardware components are offered in conjunction with the MCU products to enable a quick start-up of applications in the area of motor control, connectivity and HMI (human machine interface). The MB9A150R Series features enhanced flash memory and pin counts compared to the existing line-up of products within the Low Power Group, with flash memory available from 288KB to 544KB, including Dual Operation Flash for EEPROM emulation and packaging from 80-pin to 120-pin variations. The series is also equipped with a host of peripheral functions, such as a real-time clock and HDMI-CEC. Cameras Catch Drivers Illegally Passing School Buses in Pa. – Safety the Top Concern of Bus Operators

INDIANA, Pa., Sept. 19, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Zen-tinel, a national manufacturer and distributor of mobile surveillance systems, has developed a new stop-arm camera to identify drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.

Zen-tinel stop-arm cameras installed on the outside of buses automatically record any vehicle passing the bus while the stop-arm is extended without having to rely on driver activation.

Up to three cameras capture images of front and back license plates, as well as the face of the driver. These images can be turned over to law enforcement and used to prosecute drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.

In fact, newly installed Zen-tinel stop-arm cameras have caught three drivers who violated Pennsylvania school bus stop sign laws in the first week of implementation in the Altoona Area School District. Pennsylvania law requires all vehicles to stop while a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing and a stop arm extended according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Dana Vinglish, operations manager of Altoona Student Transportation, Inc., which handles the transportation for Altoona Area School District stated, “Mounting of the plate that holds the camera is quick and allows the camera to be moved from bus to bus easily. The entire system and mounting plates are school bus yellow so they blend perfectly.”

Vinglish stated that it was an eye-opening experience for one local driver. “The police officer questioned the gentleman who ran the red lights and the driver continuously denied the incident until the officer explained that the police possessed a photograph of the violator’s vehicle as it passed the school bus.”

Portable cameras save school districts money as only about 20 percent of a fleet needs to be outfitted. Problem routes can be targeted by transferring cameras between buses. GPS tracking also is available to map the location of a violation, helping to identify specific areas of need. With stop-arm cameras installed and the help of law enforcement, the danger of illegal school bus passing can be reduced. Zen-tinel’s stop-arm cameras are affordable for any school district.
